Astrosurge was a game created for the ScoreSpace x 8 Bits to Infinity ~ Arcade Controls Jam.
The theme was "Swarm". This was incorporated as two game elements: the enemies themselves and the ability to turn them into your own swarm. By itself it doesn't do much but upgrading grants them new abilities.
In practice, the enemies were a bit too small to hit consistently and the swarm's abilities were not as reliable. But the game still received pretty good ratings.
